Skyline of Richmond, Virginia

A sad reality

06.01.06

Yesterday we were headed to Galax and while we took a back road to Highway 58 we came upon a familiar site for this time of year. An animal had been hit by a car and lay in the middle of the road.

This time of year, it is not at all unlikely to see this; just today we saw a possum, a squirrel and a vole in different areas that had been hit. Yesterday though, it was a baby black bear that had just been weaned from its size. The poor little guy was still breathing but was unconscious and not long for this world. The driver of the vehicle had called the police to come and dispatch the animal and when we came back, it was removed.

The bottom line is that no matter how careful you are around here, you will see animals try to beat you when they cross the road. If you come up this way please, please be extra careful!
